Le café de mon enfance

When I was a child, my grandparents ran a small café in a village in the south of France. In the morning, my grandfather opened the shutters while my grandmother prepared the croissants. Regular customers arrived early, read the newspaper, and discussed the weather or village news. One summer, a young foreign photographer came into the café. She was looking for a place to work for a few days. My grandparents offered her a spare room above the café. She stayed for two weeks and photographed the local people. Before leaving, she gave my family an album. Even today, those pictures remind me of the warm atmosphere of that place and of my grandparents’ generosity.

Cuando era niño, mis abuelos tenían una pequeña cafetería en un pueblo del sur de Francia. Por la mañana, mi abuelo abría las persianas mientras mi abuela preparaba los cruasanes. Los clientes habituales llegaban temprano, leían el periódico y hablaban del tiempo o de las noticias del pueblo. Un verano entró una joven fotógrafa extranjera. Buscaba un lugar para trabajar durante unos días. Mis abuelos le ofrecieron una habitación libre encima del local. Se quedó dos semanas y fotografió a los habitantes. Antes de marcharse regaló un álbum a mi familia. Todavía hoy esas imágenes me recuerdan el ambiente cálido del lugar y la generosidad de mis abuelos.
